You may think it's unlikely for a fire to break out in an apartment, various unexpected incidents such as depression, dementia, and arson can occur. 

Even if I am not the cause of them, it's unpredictable what might happen in shared housing, like condominiums.

Once you experience a fire situation in a high-rise building, you understand why people suffocate from smoke. 

Thinking, 'Just evacuate, right?' may lead to confusion when the situation actually arises. 

In the case of a fire, smoke rises through corridors and elevators, blocking escape routes.

And what you will see would be totally different with normal vision. 

Although you probably have a fire extinguisher at home, it's not enough. 

Due to dense smoke, you may not be able to approach the fire, especially if it involves materials like Styrofoam, emitting toxic gas, making it difficult to use a fire extinguisher.

Therefore, the best approach is for adults to handle the initial firefighting while others, including children, wear masks and prioritize evacuation. 

Beyond initial firefighting efforts, swift evacuation is crucial for higher survival rates.

Fire evacuation masks, designed to protect lives during a fire, are not commonly equipped. 

Despite seeming expensive, a single purchase can provide a five-year effective period. 

Considering this as 1,825 days, the daily cost for safety is not prohibitively high.

The price of fire escape masks, such as smoke hoods, varies significantly among manufacturers. 

It's essential to understand what you get with your cost. 

Paying more doesn't necessarily mean getting more.

When purchasing a fire escape mask, consider various factors depending on your specific needs.

One of the most crucial factor is the time needed to escape from the building. 

If you work in a high-rise apartment block or a multi-story office building, consider the time required to reach a safe place or a rescue point in emergencies.

Also, check if the fire escape mask is hood-type. 

There is a considerable difference in the time it takes to evacuate wearing a regular half-mask with limited visibility compared to wearing a hood-type mask with clear vision and increased mobility.

If there's a possibility that children might use the fire escape mask, ensure that the hood fits snugly around their small necks. 

Having the right size for children is crucial, as smoke can enter through the hood.

Lastly, consider quality certification. 

In Korea, there is a quality certification system like KS certification, and products with KS certification are scarce. 

The certification process is rigorous, with diverse criteria that are challenging to meet. 

Pay special attention to the purification filter function that determines usage time, ensuring it is specialized for both dust and gas protection.
